Boracay Island has some truly outstanding beaches that are rated amongst the world's best, and there are many hotels on the island for you to enjoy them from. Unfortunately, the sea is often polluted, and you should check with the hotel whether it is safe to swim.
The port city of Cebu is the main gateway to the south of the country, and was the site of the introduction of Catholicism to the country by Magellan in the early 16th century. It's a laid back place, popular with visitors, who usually stay for a few days before moving on to one of the nearby resorts. Cebu has some excellent museums, and galleries as well as a lively nightlife and good shopping. Every Easter, the faithful parade the streets and take part in voluntary re-enactments of the crucifixion. It's a gory spectacle, and not for the squeamish, but will have a great impact upon anyone who sees it.
Mount Pinatubo towers above the city of Angeles around 2 hours north of Manila, and when the volcano erupted in 1991, the column of ash from it stretched some 40KM into the sky, and affected global temperatures for several years. The city used to be the home of the US Air Force in the country, but they've now gone, leaving a place what often seems deserted, and is filled with otherworldly rock formations.
