These days, "the troubles" may be more or less over, and the unpleasant killing over allegiance increasingly confined to the past, but West Belfast retains a lingering air of unease and simmering tensions are still apparent beneath the surface.
The main reason to visit this ugly scarred area of a scarred city is the famous murals on the Falls Road, which depict the various stages of struggle, from the Derry Apprentice Boys in 1688 (it wasn't painted then) up to the current peace process, and both sides of the conflict have made their marks in the area.
