Hosting the 2002 Commonwealth Games was the pinnacle for a city that prides itself on its sporting class, and the facilities that were built for the showpiece event have become popular venues for a number of major competitions including cycling, basketball, and ice hockey.
Manchester is also home to two of the biggest football clubs in the country, Manchester United (who play at Old Trafford Stadium close to Salford Quays) and Manchester City, who moved from their old ground at Maine Road to the new City of Manchester Stadium, which had been the venue for the Commonwealth Games.
Most matches that the teams play are sold out well in advance but you can usually get tickets to see them from one of the agencies in the city.
The Other Old Trafford Stadium is home to Lancashire Cricket Club, and throughout the summer the ground echoes to the sound of leather on willow, and International Test matches are played there.
