The heart of the Dalmatia province of Croatia which is mainly famous for its spotted dogs, Split lies on the Adriatic coast of the country some 150KM from Zagreb, and accessible by air, land, or one of the many ferries that ply their trade along the coast.
The city has been occupied since Roman times, although more recently it rose to prominence as a beach destination.
Less pretty than Dubrovnik, there is still plenty to do in Split away from the industrial areas.
The 4th century Roman Emperor Diocletian liked Split so much that he built his retirement palace in the area, and much of the ruins are still visible, and the complex is one of the most impressive Roman ruins in the world. Inside the walls, which measure almost half a mile round, there are remains of the main square with its columns, and the entrance hall. Nearby, the Emperor's Mausoleum has been converted into Split's Cathedral, ironic really when you think that the man himself spent much of his reign throwing Christians to the lions in the Colosseum.
Around Diocletian's palace is the old town, dating from medieval times, which is home to many ancient buildings and a great place to wander on a sunny afternoon. There are several stalls from which to buy food and souvenirs.
You can get cheap deals on flights and accommodation in Split throughout the year, and with the extremely low cost of living available in Croatia, Split is fast recovering its reputation as one of the best value holiday spots in Europe at the moment.
