Steeped in tradition, and moving fast toward the future, Romania is a country in transition from old hard line communism to modern democracy. Located in Eastern Europe with a small coastline on the Black Sea, Romania shares its borders, and much culture with its neighbours Bulgaria, Moldova, and Hungary.
Romania is a country of breathtaking varied countryside, with the Carpathian Mountains in the north of the Country providing rugged scenery and some excellent skiing resorts giving way to the flat plains of Wallachia in the south east around the Black Sea Coast.
There are majestic castles dating from the Middle Ages throughout the country, including the famous Castle Dracula, once home of the notorious prince, Vlad the Impaler who terrorised Europe in medieval times.
The capital of the country is Bucharest, home to the second largest building in the world, the Palace of Parliament, a vast twelve-storey block of offices, conference centres and palatial accommodation built at the behest of dictator Ceaucescu. The complex has a total of 3,100 rooms and guided tours are available. Some 7,000 homes were bulldozed to make room for the building, but elsewhere in the city, there are pockets of older architecture, in particular, the 16th century Old Court Church.
The Athenee Palace Hotel is the Bucharest equivalent of the Ritz, and hosts afternoon tea every day, which has become a traditional highpoint of the day for the high society of the city.
