Qatar occupies a peninsular and islands that jut out into the Arabian Gulf off the coast of Saudi Arabia, and until relatively recently, was fairly unknown to the western world, with an inward looking government more interested in maintaining tradition in the country than welcoming hordes of tourists.
However, in recent years, having seen the popularity of other gulf destinations such as Dubai, and obviously the revenue that has been generated, the state of Qatar has thrown open its doors to the world, and invested heavily in turning itself into a place that people actively want to travel to, rather than just somewhere that they pass through.
Fast becoming one of the biggest tourism destinations in the Middle East, Qatar boasts some world-class hotels, some of the best desert scenery in the region, and a tax-free economy funded by oil that makes it a great place to shop until you drop.
Despite its reputation for being a quiet city, Doha the capital city of Qatar is a pleasant and very friendly place. There are three major museums, the best being the National museum, which is inside the palace of the former ruler Sheikh Abdulla Bin Mohammed. The collection includes a large aquarium and artefacts celebrating the seafaring history of the country.
As Qatar develops, new hotels and attractions are opening all the time, and because the country is so active in its promotion that you can get cheap deals on flights and package holidays to Doha throughout the year.
