Sandwiched between India and China, mountainous Nepal is synonymous with the mighty Himalayas, and for Western travellers, the country is most famous for the opportunities it provides for committed hikers to visit some of the most spellbinding scenery and trek through it. For those coming from India, Nepal is a holy place where many of the most important parts of the Hindu Epics took place. With mountains soaring high above the plains of India, it is easy to see why the ancient civilisations saw Nepal as a place where heaven and Earth were close enough to meet
There are two distinct parts to the capital city of Nepal: Kathmandu. The most interesting part is the old town, where the temples stand in stately silence thronged by pilgrims, but the dirty squalor of New Kathmandu, where the air is dirty with diesel fumes and beggars sit in the street has many charms, most notably the area known as Freak Street, where the locals sell religious artefacts like prayer wheels, and in the sixties and seventies, the hippies drawn by the incense and cheap hotels came to stay.
The other main attraction is Durbar Square in the centre of the city, which is home to many of the most interesting monuments and also the Great Bell, which is rung to ward off evil spirits.
There are 2 main seasons for trekking in Nepal. The first is October - November, where late summer warmth and good conditions mean that the clear air is perfect for admiring the superlative views and exploring. The other season at the end of the Winter is not as good, with more dust obscuring the views, but it is a little cheaper to travel at that time, and as spring begins, the hills have more plants and flowers on them, making Nepal an even more attractive place to be.
