What is the Currency in Peru? Find out what type of money or foreign currency you will need when travelling to Peru. Learn about foreign exchange rates, Banking, Currency & Taxes...
The currency used in Peru is the Nuevo Sol, credit cards are quite widely accepted in the major tourist destinations, and you can withdraw money on Visa cards in most cities. Plenty of places accept US Dollars and you get the best exchange rates from the change bureaus rather than at the banks.
On the whole Peru is a fairly cheap country to visit, but in areas like Machu Picchu you'll be fairly hard pushed to get much in the way of budget accommodation or food. It is customary to leave a tip of around 10% in most restaurants as a reward for good service, and tour guides expect a couple of pounds a day. Cabs are not metered, and you agree a price in advance, and do not tip.
