Cyprus itself may well be divided between Cypriot (read Greek) control and that of Turkey, but the tourism industry of the resorts such as Larnaca is equally schizophrenic, with three separate groups wrestling for control over the island.
The first group are the tourists who come to the island simply for the excellent climate that it enjoys, and do no more than relax on the stunning beaches and swim in the sea.
The second group are the people who are drawn to Cyprus by the rich history and heritage that can be found there. One of the cradles of the Greek civilisation, the island is dotted with the ruins of temples and palaces that range from Greek to Roman in style and date, and make the island a great place to visit if you are interested in history.
The third and final group are perhaps the least welcome in the eyes of the locals, and yet perversely contribute the most to the local economy, and are the visitors that Cyprus most relies on. Over the last few years, Ayia Napa has become the clubbing capital of Europe, outpacing Ibiza with the breadth of entertainment on offer in its many bars and clubs. The only certainty is that visitors to Cyprus enjoy their holiday, and come back again and again.
You can get cheap flights and package holidays to Cyprus throughout the year, and once there, the relatively low cost of day-to-day living makes a holiday on the island a genuine bargain.
