Lying in Central Africa with the Indian Ocean to its east, Kenya is one of the premier tourist destinations on the continent. For several hundred years, travellers have come to Kenya hunting, and latterly just to see the many species of wild animals that roam free through the interior. Kenya is a place of open skies and hot sun, of equatorial climate, and stunning scenery. It's the place that invented safari (literally journey) and revered by anthropologists as the cradle of humanity. It's everything that you expect Africa to be, and at the same time, a well-developed tourism spot that means that no matter how far you go, you're never far from comfort.
The capital city Nairobi is where most visitors to Kenya first arrive, and as soon as you step out into the baking heat of the open air from the air-conditioned splendour of Jomo Kenyatta airport, you are immediately aware of where you are. Though the city is cosmopolitan and modern, it is also a place that looks backwards as well as forwards. There are some excellent museums that celebrate every facet of local and indeed all of African life, as well as plenty of parks to unwind in. Nairobi is a modern city, and has a lot of great hotels to stay in.
The main reason for travelling to Kenya has always been the chance to go on Safari and see the fantastic game. The Masai Mara Serengheti reserve in the south east of the country is the most famous of the parks, and home to lions, elephants, zebras, and also herds of wildebeest that stampede annually as they follow the seasons north and south. You can drive through the park in your own car, or join one of the many tours that visit the park.
The best places for seeing game are on the western boundary, around the spectacular Esoit Olooloo Escarpment.
Warning:
Travellers to Kenya should be keenly aware that there is a real problem with mugging, particularly in Nairobi and along the beaches around Mombassa. You should avoid carrying too much money with you and wearing Jewellery, and never go into dodgy looking areas on your own, or at night. Likewise, if driving in Kenya, you should try and do so in convoy, particularly in the northern border area with Somalia, where there are known to be bandits and little in the way of law enforcement to protect you. Always leave your passport in your hotel, and carry a photocopy with you in case you need ID.
