The Middle Eastern Kingdom of Jordan lies between Israel and Saudi Arabia with a small Red Sea Coastline. Rich in history, Jordan was one of the most important points on the trade route between the East and Mediterranean, as well as being the setting for many of the stories in the bible.
With legendary landscapes, ancient burial grounds, dozens of fortresses, and Petra, the incredible city carved into cliff faces, you could be forgiven for thinking that all of the attractions of Jordan are historic, but in truth, the country is a modern, thriving place to go, unmistakeably Arabic in tradition, but as forward thinking and welcoming as any other place in the region, and a great place to visit and tour.
Most visitors coming to Jordan arrive into Amman, the capital city. Amman has been settled for around 5 millennia and was an important Roman city, then called Philadelphia. There are many ruins from the era around the city, and whilst most of them are little more than rubble, the most impressive sight from the era is the Roman Theatre, which is in the centre of the city, and originally held 6000 people for performances.
There are also several museums, notably the National Archaeological Museum and the Folklore Museum that give you a great insight into the history of the country and its importance and influence in ancient times.
Amman is a great place to start your holiday in Jordan because it is so central, and because the transport links to the rest of the country tend to converge there.
