The history of Paris can be traced back to the 3rd century BC, when the area was settled by a tribe known as the Parisii; although the city was only really founded in 508AD when the Frankish king made Paris his capital.
The city began to prosper in the middle ages, when the Sorbonne academy, The Louvre and The cathedral of Notre Dame were begun.
British Victory in the Hundred Years war meant that Paris was under the control of London between 1420 and 1453, and once they had been removed from the country, Paris really grew up in the period of the Renaissance, when many of the most beautiful buildings were completed.
The revolution in 1789 was mostly against the excesses of the rulers, and the birth of the republic under Napoleon Bonaparte was an era beset with war.
By the 20th century, Paris was beginning to become the centre for bohemian life and art that it remains to this day. Despite the Nazi occupation in the Second World War, Paris emerged largely unscathed by the bombs, and remains a beautiful elegant city that attracts millions of visitors every year .
