Since emerging from the enforced secularity of the communist era, Poland has embraced Catholicism with a vengeance - helped in no small part that the pope is Polish - and the city celebrates many of the larger religious festivals such as Easter, the Assumption, Christmas, and Palm Sunday with some vigour, and these often include parades and much decoration.
Other traditional festivals are The Drowning of Marzanna - which marks the end of winter on 21st March, and Midsummer on 21st June.
In the run up to Christmas, traditional markets are held in front of the Palace of Culture and Science and if you can brave the temperatures, are a great place to pick up some sugary goodies.
