Air France Eye Up Alitalia

Air France last week confirmed that it was potentially open to discuss a takeover of Alitalia, the struggling Italian operator. At the moment though they are waiting to see if the Italian operator invites them to discuss the possibility.

The restructuring plan Alitalia have devised has also received a positive response from Air France, the French operator seeing it as a suitable way of maintaining the business as an ongoing one and also facilitating the purchase of the airline by a third party.

At the moment there is much to discuss of course, and the restructuring plan itself has not commenced yet. This means that Air France, as a potential investor in Alitalia, would either wait to assess the implementation of the restructuring plan or move in quickly at a lower price to gain possession early.
